About Anne Murphy

Anne Murphy is a Licensed Master Social Worker providing family and child therapy in New York. She earned her Masters Degree in Social Work from Fordham University. Anne has been counseling children, adolescents, adults and families over a 30 year career within child welfare/foster care, court systems, domestic violence shelters, and therapeutic preschools. After graduating Stony Brook University with a degree in Psychology she obtained her master’s in social work to provide family counseling for children with school refusal and anxiety issues.

Anne’s goal is to assist families in crises to view that as a window of opportunity for change and learning skills. Anne employs various modalities to guide her work with families and children including CBT and FFT to build connections and assist families with symptom relief and confidence in their skill building. Anne has insight into how childhood illness’ either chronic, acute or life threatening, can affect families daily and overall functioning and stress. She utilizes empathic listening to help families build specific goal-oriented pathways to resiliency and symptom relief.

In her free time, Anne, her husband and teenager enjoy thrift shopping for clothes, music, and furniture.

Training & Techniques

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

CBT is an evidence-based approach to treating anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety, separation anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.  It has also been demonstrated to be effective in treating depression. CBT helps children and teens analyze and reduce negative thoughts that lead to unhelpful thinking and behavior in order to promote more positive thoughts and experiences.

Solution Focused Brief Therapy

Solution-focused brief therapy is a strengths based approach that emphasizes how positive behaivoral attributes can be applied to help children and teens overcome difficulties such as depression, anxiety, and trauma.  It focuses on how life will be without the problem the child is experiencing. Solution-Focused Brief Therapy can be applied as a short term approach to help the child set realistic goals and promote positive outcomes and experiences.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing is a therapeutic technique used to establish rapport with children and adolescents and used to encourage positive behavioral changes. The goal is to help children convince themselves they should, can, and will change. It emphasize the importance of finding internal motivation to change thoughts and behaviors to promote positive experiences. Instead of convincing children to “want to change,” they become aware of their need to make changes in their life to experience success.

Family Functional Therapy

Family Functional Therapy is an evidence-based approach to supporting families to make positive changes at home. Family Functional Therapy is a comprehensive and wholistic approach that can address a wide range of difficulties affecting families, including mental health issues, conduct disorders, substance use issues, truancy, and related problems. Using an educational and collaborative approach, a family functional therapist helps parents to increase knowledge of child development, strengthen the parent/child relationship, enhance the caregiver’s skills in managing childrens’ behaviors, help parents cope with the stress of parenting, and address other areas of need, such as educational and vocational assistance. In addressing the struggles families face in their relationships they can more aptly benefit from other types of mental health therapy as well.
