Nicole Theiss
Nicole is a licensed social worker with experience providing counseling services to children and their families in a variety of settings within the community and in schools, as well as equine therapy programs. She has worked with children and adolescents individually and in educational and supportive groups. Nicole has also worked closely with school personnel to develop a comprehensive substance abuse prevention and intervention program that benefits numerous children. Through these efforts she understands the importance of early interventions to help children and teens learn and utilize positive coping strategies.
Nicole believes that healing is a collaborative endeavor that requires honest caring without judgment. She is passionate about cooperatively assisting her clients in reaching their goals. This includes, but is not limited to communicating with parents and schools for the benefit and safety of the child. Nicole tailors her approach to meet the individual needs of each child, and uses differentiation and scaffolding in her interventions. She also incorporates cognitive-behavioral therapy, play therapy, art therapy, and strengths-based/solution-focused approaches.
Nicole received her Master of Social Work degree from Sacred Heart University where she focused on mental health counseling and crisis intervention. She has received advanced training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma Informed Care, and Strengths-Based Perspectives. She is currently in the process of completing a CASAC certification.
In her spare time, Nicole supports her community as a volunteer with her local fire department. She also likes to stay active through regular gym sessions and horseback riding.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
CBT is an evidence-based approach to treating anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety, separation anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. It has also been demonstrated to be effective in treating depression. CBT helps children and teens analyze and reduce negative thoughts that lead to unhelpful thinking and behavior in order to promote more positive thoughts and experiences.
Trauma Informed Care
Trauma Informed Care is an approach that emphasizes developing a complete undertstanding of childrens’ experiences, including their past and present, in order to provide mental health support with a focus on healing. This approach focuses on promoting engagement in therapy and fostering positive outcomes that will improve their lives. The goal is also to avoid retraumatizing them. Using a truma informed approach, the clinician recognizes the impact trauma may have on the children and teens and identifies ways to help them recover.
Strengths-Based Perspective
A Strength-Based Perspective emphasizes the child’s strengths instead of focusing on what is “wrong.” The child or teen’s strengths are viewed as important skills and resources that can be utilized to help them overcome obstacles. Using this perspective, children are viewed in terms of what they can do instead of what they cannot. This is very important in helping children and adolecents overcome depression and anxiety as they learn how to manage difficulties by using their strengths and learning new skills to help them be most successful.
