Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
What is EMDR?
You feel like past events are holding you hostage. When you try to move forward, you are reminded of what happened. This reignites negative emotions and makes you feel helpless. You can discover how to leave the past behind and become excited about the future.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) helps to make sense of confusing and upsetting memories. When your thoughts are more organized, you can begin to think clearly. It is not necessary to carry this weight around forever. In EMDR therapy sessions, you will learn how to leave unpleasant memories behind and feel free again.
Why We Believe in EMDR
EMDR therapy is highly effective and evidence-based approach to help with healing from trauma, such as bullying, grief, loss, and other upsetting life events. EMDR can help address challenges that lead to poor relationships, difficulties with work or school, and other psychological issues.
We use EMDR because it helps you disconnect from painful memories and orient toward positive ways of thinking. We believe that the past does not have to define your future. With EMDR therapy sessions, you will experience results even for trauma that was experienced years ago.
Our EMDR therapists have extensive experience using this treatment method with children, adolescents, adults, and families. Trauma may have been experienced by you or your children, or “passed down” within the family. It is important to take a comprehensive approach so you can all begin to heal.
EMDR Therapy for Children
Your child may feel unsure of what they are thinking and feeling. When “bad” things happen, your child walks around feeling full of emotions like confusion, anger, and sadness. This leaves little room for the “good” emotions or thoughts. EMDR therapy for children works to help them get rid of these feelings so they only have space for the positive thoughts and feelings. We use specific strategies to help this process happen, such as tapping, eye movements, listening to music and sounds. Through this process your child’s negative thoughts will leave them and be replaced with more positive feelings about themselves. EMDR therapists can then help your child experience success at school, home, and with friends.
Your child may demonstrate emotional or behavioral challenges as a result of past experiences. You wonder how this started and what can be done to help them improve. EMDR therapy will help your child expel negative thoughts so they can have happier and better experiences in the future.
EMDR Therapy for Teens
Your teen may be haunted by an event that happened years ago or by one that occurred recently. No matter when they experienced it, they are struggling now. Their grades have declined. They are constantly angry or upset. Your teen has isolated themselves from friends or family. Whatever you say to them does not help. You are both struggling to figure out how to make it better.
EMDR therapy can help your teen recognize thoughts and feelings that are making them feel trapped and alone. Once they are aware of these thoughts, they can identify how to get rid of them to make space for positive feelings. This approach can help prevent issues, such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Through EMDR therapy, your teen will learn how to disconnect from painful events so they can heal, and welcome in positive thoughts emotions. This will help your teen to become stronger and more confident. Benefits of EMDR for your teen include: learning to express themselves in a positive way, feeling emboldened to engage in healthy activities, improving relationships, and experiencing success in school. Your teen will utilize their new way of thinking so they can take steps toward their goals.
